Choosing your first Annandale: from taste preference to bottle
You do not need to know the entire Annandale range by heart to make a good first choice. First, decide who you are buying for and what flavour profile you are looking for. Then, the series, cask style and product notes can help you create a shortlist. Meadow Lane is the Annandale importer for the Benelux and offers both series.
1. For yourself or for someone else?
If you are buying for yourself, you can start with a bottle you already enjoy. Note down two or three characteristics: fruity, vanilla, spicy, creamy or smoky. For a gift, one targeted question is often more useful than guessing: does the recipient like peat smoke? If this is unknown, a sample pack may give you more opportunity to discover.
2. Do you want smoke?
Man O’Words is the unpeated Annandale series and Man O’Sword is the peated. Choose the series that suits your smoke preference. Then, continue with the cask. Choosing a series is a starting point; two bottles from the same series can have distinctly different flavour profiles due to their individual casks.
3. What flavour profile are you looking for?
Use the current product notes to compare cask styles. With the bourbon variants, you can look for fruit, vanilla and sweetness. With the Oloroso editions, stewed fruit and spices are useful points of comparison. STR and Double Oak offer different combinations of fruit, wood spices, sweetness and structure.
These are selection aids, not fixed recipes for every future bottling. Always open the product page and check which notes apply to that specific bottle. Above all, take the words that align with your preference seriously, without expecting to literally recognise every flavour mentioned.
4. One bottle or several styles first?
A large bottle suits a clear preference. A sample pack makes sense when you mainly want to discover the difference between smoke profiles or cask styles. The Double Oak Tasting Pack in the current selection contains six 50 ml miniatures, with three cask styles in a peated and an unpeated edition. Check the current pack contents on the product page before ordering.
For a targeted comparison, you can choose one miniature as a reference and note down each subsequent one in terms of fruit, sweetness, spices, smoke and finish. Write down what you taste yourself and which combination you enjoy most. This will give you a useful preference for your next bottle.
5. Check the purchase details
- Read the current product availability.
- Check the volume, alcohol percentage and cask style.
- View the shipping options and costs at checkout.
- Coordinate a preference for collection in advance with Meadow Lane.
- Do not order a bottle of whisky and an accessories set based on the same expectation: check what is actually included.
Let us help you think through your options
A question such as ‘I am looking for an unpeated whisky with vanilla and fruit’ makes advising easier than ‘what is the best whisky?’. When buying a gift, mention what the recipient already drinks and which flavour they particularly dislike. We can then discuss a suitable direction from the current selection.
Start with the range and read through the bottle that appeals to you in full. This keeps flavour choice, product specifications and ordering as one logical process.
